Meeting the Adler gemmologists

Meeting the Adler gemmologists

Born of mankind?s millennial fascination with precious metalwork and jewellery, Maison Adler, founded in 1886, has inherited and maintained centuries-old traditions of excellence. Exquisite gemstones are carefully studied and subject to rigorous tests before being selected by the inhouse gemmologists. Through four generations the family firm has handed down a passion for these gemstones which are then showcased in all their glory by the artisan?s imaginative setting.

WHAT IS THE KEY MISSION OF THE GEMMOLOGISTS AND BUYERS AT THE MAISON ADLER?

A crucial aspect of the Adler gemmologists? role is to identify the gemstone and its origin. They also advise the client in her choice of the right gemstone for the desired piece or investment. A part of the buyer?s mission is to search for the gemstones needed for future creations. Then, along with the gemmologist, they begin the preparation of the gemstones? placement according to their colour, dimensions and quality, with utmost patience and attention to detail.

HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT SELECTING GEMSTONES?

We have different processes for different projects. In our quest for gems that are both unusual and extraordinary, it sometimes happens that an exceptional gemstone attracts our attention. Once the gem is ours, our designers can rise to the challenge of highlighting the stone?s singular beauty by placing it at the heart of a new creation, enhancing its potential. A gemstone is an incredibly powerful source of artistic inspiration. Its shape and its colour evoke a myriad of associations and interpretations. Most of all, the buyer must detect the extraordinary potential of a given gemstone to stir emotions. It is because gemstones are the heart and soul of a jewel that we pay a lot of attention to the smallest details.

??All our diamonds of more than 0.5 carat, and our coloured stones of 1 carat or more, have been certified by independent laboratories??

Sometimes it is the designs of our future creations which establish the parameters of our choice. We use the artist?s drawing to prepare and spend many hours on the placement of the stones to come to a perfectly proportioned, harmonious creation. This time consuming project is key prerequisite step to the perfection and originality of our creations. All of our gemstones are adjusted and set by hand. Our artisan jewellers are masters in the technique of pav., bead, prong and bezel settings – applying each according to the aesthetic demands of the designer and the specialized requirements of each creation. The expertise of our craftsmen also aims to elicit a strong emotional impact on all viewers of those creations.

WHAT GEMSTONES DO YOU USE, AND WHAT ARE YOUR QUALITY CRITERIA?

By choosing our gemstones with great care, we are able to select a range of coloured gemstones with that touch of individuality, a luminous soul, which gives character to our pieces. Precious gemstones, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, are the basis of our work, and the diamond, a star component in all of our jewellery production, has a prominent position in all of our creations. What sets us apart is our willingness to include gemstones that are less well-known, or not used as often. All of our diamonds of more than 0.5 carat and of our coloured gemstones of 1 carat or more have also been assessed by independent laboratories which examine their colour, clarity and origins before delivering a report.

??We select gemstones with a luminous soul??

We also work with cultured pearls. Their quality depends on the thickness of their nacre, which determines the longevity and the beauty of their lustre. The nacre displays a delicate colour gradient known as irisation or orient, which gives the pearl its irresistible charm. Pearls can be found in a wide range of shapes and colours, pink, grey, white, cream, gold, or black, the choice is infinite. They are often round, but we like to include the exquisite unexpected baroque shapes too. Our supply of exceptional South Seas cultured pearls come directly from the producer. For Maison Adler, cultured pearls are indispensable. We use them for their organic note of lustrous softness that only they can add to our creations.

DO YOU PROVIDE STONES FOR SPECIAL PERSONALISED ORDERS?

Our professional skill is at our client?s service. Our expert sales advisors listen attentively and observe. Often clients come to us for advice on specific items of jewellery that they would like to create or customize. This obviously involves the savoir-faire of our gemmologists, who must then start their search for the requisite stones after having noted the client?s expectations and desires. Our ultimate goal is to find the most beguiling gemstones and bring to life the enchanting treasures that will delight the imagination.
