I was immediately fascinated by the mechanism. Love at\u00a0first sight, as they say; I was totally taken in by the way this slim\u00a0object opened and closed, a blend of mechanical magic and poetry\u00a0that brought up so many feelings in me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I bought my first fan when I was ten, with my pocket money. That\u00a0same year, I tried to recreate it with some thin sticks and craft paper,\u00a0and after that, I was hooked&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I\u2019m completely self-taught: everything I learned was from books\u00a0and studying antique fans and reproducing each stage of the\u00a0manufacturing process to rediscover the skills of a lost art. The fan\u00a0allows me a huge range of creative freedom, with its endless variety of\u00a0shapes and choice of materials and their combination. I\u2019ve developed\u00a0a three-dimensional aesthetic that plays with the concept of volume\u00a0like in a pop-up book. Since I was also fascinated by Japanese\u00a0crafts and design at a very young age, the idea came to me to merge\u00a0the art of the fan with the art of origami. That led me to produce the\u00a0first origami fans.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8178\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8178\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8178\" src=\"https:\/\/adler.ch\/staging\/site\/\/app\/uploads\/2018\/09\/G5MG_0054-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sylvain Le Guen - fan creation\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8178\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sylvain Le Guen &#8211; fan creation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><em>WHAT IS IT ABOUT FANS THAT ATTRACTS YOU?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mainly it is their mechanism\u2014how dense and compact they are\u00a0when they\u2019re closed, how intriguing they are, because you don\u2019t\u00a0know what\u2019s hidden inside. Then, when a fan is opened, it becomes\u00a0something else, revealing its intimate self, its seeming fragility, the\u00a0expression of its true nature. For me, we have there the emergence\u00a0of form, an organic development, a living thing taking shape out of\u00a0straight lines and angles. The principles of proportion, the golden\u00a0ratio (\u03a6, or phi), and calculations of angles allow me to construct\u00a0seemingly simple modules that actually follow strict geometric rules.\u00a0Usually I don\u2019t work with a theme for collections because I like to give\u00a0each creation an individual personality, rather than try to create a\u00a0set. Nature and geometry fuel my endless curiosity and allow me the freedom to create.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The image of the fan evokes a wealth of historical images: a flamenco\u00a0dancer, a geisha, the ladies of the French court in the 18th century, and\u00a0so on. Throughout history it has been a practical object as well as a\u00a0symbolic one. Very few people know that in fact, fans were originally\u00a0used by men! They symbolised the power of the clan leader or warlord\u00a0and they could be used to keep the horde\u2019s fire going, repel insects\u00a0or guide the troops into battle. With time, the fan has taken on a\u00a0wide variety of shapes and styles across all cultures of the world. In\u00a0China, fans were carried by members of the educated class, notables,\u00a0judges and courtesans. In Egypt, they were made of gold or feathers,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">veritable sceptres denoting the authority of the sovereign. Then, in\u00a0the 16th century, they began to be imported into Europe from Japan\u00a0and China, and were favoured only by the gentler sex. Women of the\u00a0aristocracy saw this intriguing exotic item as a frivolous accessory to\u00a0keep their hands busy and signal their social status by the richness of its ornamentation. Queens and empresses throughout the courts\u00a0of Europe wore jewel-encrusted fans, each piece more delicate and\u00a0extravagant than the next.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><em>HOW DID YOUR ASSOCIATION WITH LA MAISON ADLER\u00a0COME ABOUT?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The decoration Team first contacted me to ask whether I would like\u00a0to develop a fitting environment for the current window display of\u00a0their jewellery. They showed me the <a href=\"\/?p=7871\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fan\u2019tastic collection<\/a>, a\u00a0reinterpretation of the fan\u2019s aesthetics and its symbolism.\u00a0I immediately saw the contemporary connection with my creations.\u00a0What I like most about this collaboration is the company\u2019s trust in me,\u00a0the fact that they\u2019ve given me free rein to create. Our work grew out\u00a0of the exchange of ideas and sharing each other\u2019s passions.\u00a0Giving a modern reinterpretation to this symbol while working\u00a0with a long-established family jewellery business meant joining a\u00a0demanding, yet fascinating creative project, not unlike the history of\u00a0the fan itself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8181\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8181\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8181\" src=\"https:\/\/adler.ch\/staging\/site\/\/app\/uploads\/2018\/09\/G7MG_0063-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Sylvain Le Guen - fan creation\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8181\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sylvain Le Guen &#8211; fan creation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><em>HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO COMBINE YOUR WORLD, YOUR OWN AESTHETIC SENSE WITH ADLER\u2019S?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This cooperative effort was the start of a real dialogue between\u00a0jewellery on the one hand and the fan on the other.\u00a0What I wanted to do was to exhibit the structure of the fan, without\u00a0impinging upon the impact of the jewellery itself. Together, they form a whole.\u00a0For me, it is essential to arouse curiosity and surprise by creating\u00a0unexpected shapes and volumes that arise when the fans are opened\u00a0and closed. Like <a href=\"https:\/\/adler.ch\/staging\/site\/\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adler<\/a> I seek to add that extra touch of charm with\u00a0their creations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><em>HOW DID YOU DEVELOP THIS UNIQUE FAN COLLECTION?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I used clean, simple lines to best accompany the jewellery. The\u00a0Collection I created for the Maison Adler is made up of 22 nonfigurative\u00a0fans in a single colour, each with its own architecture.\u00a0My theme was the interchangeability and chromatic consistency\u00a0of each pieces. I go for high-impact, emphatic structures: broken,\u00a0radiating lines producing an interplay of hollow and solid spaces.\u00a0As I see it, the yin-yang balance can be achieved by repeating elements\u00a0with straight lines and by arranging them in a way they define a\u00a0circular object.
